Prevent Roof Deterioration and Damage in Boardman Ohio
Contemplating the choice between a 25-year, or 30-year shingle is not a new concept. If you live in a community like Boardman, Ohio, and your home is between 15 and 30 years old, pay attention. Many homeowners don't realize that the environment impacts the life of your roof. That life can be longer or much shorter than rated. And, maintenance or lack of, makes a difference.
What is roof maintenance?
Roof maintenance includes inspection, cleaning, keeping gutters cleaned, checking vents and flashing, and ensuring your attic remains insulated. In other words, you are going to need a ladder and a flashlight to start.
Start with an inspection.
Step one is getting a good look at your roof from on top and in the attic. On the roof, look for curling shingles, curling, or missing grit. Are nails protruding through the shingles? Are there cracks in any caulking or gaps in flashing that water can get behind? Do you have black streaks or moss growing on the roof? Look for any sign of water entering the attic, especially in areas where there is discoloration on the ceiling below. If everything looks good, you are nearly finished.
Keep your gutters clean!
Clogged gutters cause problems, especially in the winter. Clogs prevent drainage and cause ice dams which can easily lift shingles. Once water gets under the shingle during a thaw/freeze cycle, it follows the path of least resistance. Keeping gutters clean is the easiest way to keep water from compromising your roof and causing damage.
