Warren Ohio A City Of Firsts
The Beginnings Of a Manufacturing Hub
Warren was founded in 1798 by Ephraim Quinby on land he purchased from The Connecticut Land Company. Quinby named the town after the town surveyor Moses Warren. In 1801, Warren became the Trumbull County seat.
By 1846, the population had grown to nearly 1600 people, and the town had five churches, twenty stores, three newspaper offices, one bank, one wool factory, and two flour mills.
A Trading and Manufacturing Center
By 1888, there were four railroads connecting Warren with other parts of Ohio. Local businesses manufactured incandescent bulbs, furniture, carriages, automobiles and more.
Streetlights and Motorcars
In the 1890s, the Packard brothers James and William formed the Packard Electric Company and The Packard Motor Car Company. Warren was the first town in the U.S. to have electric streetlights, provided by Packard Electric.
The first 400 Packard automobiles were built in the Warren factory at 408 Dana St NE. Packards were the definition of the term luxury car, with many innovations to their credit, including the first to use a steering wheel, bumpers, and four-wheel brakes.
