Is Your Roof Ready for 2026 Storms? A Local Summer Checklist

Spring in eastern Ohio hasn't exactly been a walk in the park. Between the straight-line winds and those March 31st storms that rattled Geauga and Wayne counties, our local roofs have definitely earned their keep. We know a roofing checklist isn't the most exciting part of your summer, but your roof is the quiet hero keeping your home safe. Checking in on it now is simply the best way to ensure you can relax and enjoy the sunshine with total peace of mind.

If you plan to stay in your home for years to come, a little proactive maintenance now is the best
value for your money. Before the season gets away from you, run through this simple checklist.

  1. Check for Missing or Curled Shingles

Grab a pair of binoculars and scan your roof from the ground. Look for missing, cracked, or
curling shingles. You should also watch for bare patches where granules have worn away. After the 80 mph gusts we saw in late March, pay close attention to the edges and ridges. Without those granules, your roof loses its ability to reflect UV rays. This makes it much harder to keep your home cool during heat spikes.

Pro Tip: A small repair now can add years to your roof's life and prevent a costly interior leak later. It’s also worth noting that insurance companies are less likely to pay a claim on an older roof, making proactive care even more critical.

  2. Clear Out Your Seamless Gutters

Rain and debris are just a part of life in our area. This year's wet spring has left behind a mountain of twigs and seeds that can block downspouts. This sends summer storm runoff straight toward your foundation. Because the average water damage claim is now over $15,000, keeping these channels clear is a massive win for your wallet.

  3. Inspect the Flashing

Flashing is the metal installed around chimneys, skylights, and vents. It is one of the most common entry points for summer leaks. Here is the tricky part: where you see evidence of a leak inside your home may not be where water is actually entering outside. Damaged or rusted flashing is always worth a professional eye.

  4. Check Your Attic Ventilation

A hot, stuffy attic can bake your shingles from the inside out. This can significantly shorten
their lifespan. As we head into what is predicted to be a record-breaking hot summer, make sure attic vents are not blocked by insulation or stored boxes. Proper airflow keeps your roof cooler. It also helps lower your AC bills. Most manufacturers, including those in the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, actually require proper ventilation to keep your warranty valid.

  5. Look for Algae or Moss

Humid summer days create the perfect environment for moss and algae, especially on shaded sections of the roof. Moss holds moisture against your shingles, which speeds up wear over time. What looks like a simple cosmetic issue can eventually become a structural one.
